The Importance of Using #Hashtags

Clearwater Staff

The digital age is continually growing as innovations in technology make it possible to better almost all functions of life. While that may seem like an exaggeration, it indeed isn’t. Now, more than ever, people are connecting around the globe through social media, email, and videos that allow anyone to view and comment on them.

With such a widespread development, it would make sense that companies take advantage of the tools that are basically at their fingertips. What some may find, especially for older businesses, is that figuring out the digital age requires a lot more attention than previously thought.

The term ‘millennial’ has been circulating for the past few years and there’s a good reason for it. Millennials are highly in tune with the changes that happen with technology, in some cases, almost overnight. Constantly being connected to the Internet leaves them able to know all the world’s information with the press of a button. They know the latest trends, terms, and yes, even marketing strategies that help put new businesses on the map. What is one of these strategies? The hashtag.

A hashtag is simply a word, string of words, or even a phrase, that is preceded by the hashtag symbol. It is used as a tool to get others searching for these hashtags to find any and all posts, pictures, or videos that contain the same hashtags.

Right away, you can see the benefit. Imagine, citizens in Japan, Italy, and Brazil, all seeing a post made from some teenager’s room in America. That is the impact these hashtags have. They mostly are seen on Instagram since it is a common tactic to jumpstart a person’s page, especially if they are trying to promote a personal business venture. If you put a hashtag in a regular search engine, however, you still will receive page after page from sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr that all feature the particular hashtag.

It seems easy enough to use, right? Well, wording is everything. Using the most popular searched words or something that’s trending will get more attention than some weird and creative idea you might have come up with. In this case, clever isn’t what will market a product, at least not quickly. It doesn’t seem like that would be the answer, but it’s best to understand that what isn’t fast and easy may never be seen by the majority. If you’re looking to use hashtags properly, then these tips can help.

Mobile Apps make connecting others with your brand easier than ever.

There’s an App for That!

Yes, as odd as that may seem, there are apps that will give you the most popular hashtags to use. Hashtag Generator, TagsForLikes, and Hashtags for Instagram, are just a few of the options you have at finding the best words. Some will show the relevant tags that are trending. This makes it easier when people search the hashtag to find your page and generate more followers and likes.

Just Search

It can be that simple, too. Social media, like Twitter and Instagram, have features that allow users to search for what’s currently trending in the news, T.V., and online. The search will show all the pages using the hashtag and will even bring up articles that incorporate them. Instagram also has a small tool that, if you use a hashtag when posting a photo, it will show the number of times that particular one has been used, allowing for more mainstream or original content posting.

Know How Many You Want to Use

Sometimes too much isn’t a good thing. People don’t want to be overwhelmed by the amount of hashtags on a page. It might even turn a person off because it seems like too much boasting or just used to only grab attention. While you want to do this to a degree, you don’t want that to be a staple for a company.

Hashtags are just one of many marketing tools. It may seem like a simple idea, but properly using the hashtag method does take some consideration. That’s why it works to stick with what’s popular and frequently searched for. The individuality should come from the product or service, not just a post.
